Statue of Liberty: early crowd funding example for art in public places


It seems the US government was a bit short of cash back in 1885, when France gifted them the Statue of Liberty. So New York newspaper editor Joseph Pulitzer published a public appeal for $ in his paper. It worked! They raised enough cash to pay for the plinth which gave Madame Liberty something to stand on. Imagine that! The foundations of Liberty are supported by a broad-based engaged democracy šŸ™‚
