Here are 3 willow charcoal sketches that show how charcoal is more fluid than paint, and more immediate in expression.


In my opinion, willow charcoal is more spontaneous and fluid than paint. It’s like an instant Polaroid in pencil, capturing the bare essentials of the subject. These sketches serve to capture an expression, rather than describing a realistic detailed image of the actual model. Too much detail detracts from the piece — better to leave it to the viewer to complete the lines and fill in the hollow spaces.
