Reflecting upon the fresh memories of this year’s Christmas gifts, both given and received, it occurs to me that art is rather like the spirit of Christmas…it cannot really be packaged and sold. It is not the gift under the tree, but rather the creative gift of the artist’s curiosity, manifest in the artwork. For me, this is why I feel that art in public places, freely available in the great outdoors, is much preferred to that controlled by turnstiles and gallery admission fees. (And of course, the chance of encountering elves is also greatly enhanced outdoors).
