Congrats to Google.  They are using StreetView software to give art lovers a chance to visit some of the world’s greatest galleries — without leaving home.  Imagine.  No admission fee, and no travel or parking costs!  Check it out here…

It’s a good start, and holds much promise.  So far, it only contains a dozen or so artworks from each gallery, and for the most part they have chosen portrait-style “classic” pieces and a few Impressionist works by the likes of Van Gogh, Cézanne and Gauguin.  Hopefully Google will add some modern pieces, and especially some modern sculpture in 3D so that they can viewed from all sides in their natural (outdoor) setting.  How about the Archer by Henry Moore in front of Toronto City Hall?  Or, Chillida’s sculpture park in San Sebastian Spain?  Or Richard Serra’s metal sculpture at MoMa or the Guggenheim in Bilbao?
